Coffee in Cape Town: 5 coffee shops that call the shotsMy little bio is brought to you by the letter C: I’m a copywriter, card maker, and coffee drinker who just so happens to be a big fan of all things cake, chocolate, and cats. Born and bred in Switzerland (cheese, anyone?), I’ve spent most of the 21st century in North America (eating burgers). Even though I’m scared of flying, I never pass up the opportunity to pack my bags and add some stamps to my passport. Find me on Twitter with @isabellesagt

Coffee is said to have been discovered in Ethiopia – by a goat herder. Actually, by a goat that was particularly energetic and hyper after eating a certain (coffee) bean. People figured that something that is energizing for a goat, must also be energizing for people – the rest is history. Today, we don’t have to chew the beans anymore. Instead, we roast and brew to our heart’s delight.

A place where they know how to celebrate coffee o’clock is South Africa: Check out our definitive list of some of the coolest coffee shops in Cape Town.

Truth

Truth is one of the coolest coffee shops in the world. Even if you don’t like coffee, you should drop by and visit the steampunk-themed roastery and coffee shop. Everything – from the equipment to the accessories and the bathrooms – is carefully curated and designed to match the Victorian fantasy theme. And how’s the coffee that this out-of-this world machinery creates? Delectable. The baristas are world class after all.

Deluxe Coffeeworks

In a time where all coffee shops are kind of the same, Deluxe Coffeeworks provides a nice change. The owners have a passion for coffee and they don’t care what all the other coffee places do: At Deluxe Coffeeworks, there is no wifi and no fancy food. It’s a coffee place where it’s all about the coffee. Speaking of beans, their blends are sourced from all over the world and have fabulous (and promising?) names such as Vengeance, Resurrection or Antithesis (decaf).

IsabelleBean There

Bean There is bright and stylishly cozy. Both the interior of the place and the coffee itself is guaranteed to make make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Coffee fans will appreciate that they only serve single origin coffee that is certified Fair Trade from small farms; all of their beans get roasted on the spot and in small batches.

Jason Bakery

Jason Bakery – the name kind of gives it away – is not primarily a coffee place. However, the artisan bakery serves all kinds of baked goodies that pair extremely well with their coffee, including delicious pies, sumptuous sandwiches, delectable pastries and bread, of course. So why not have a peanut butter maple bacon croissants with your cup of joe?

Origin Coffee Roasting

The name says it all: Origin Coffee Roasting is South Africa’s artisan coffee roasting pioneer. If you want to take your coffee game to the next level, Origin’s tasting room is the place to be. You can try different beans, styles and equipment. Feel free to check out the roastery or take some classes at the barista school. But don’t worry, it’s not just all work and no play: There is a cafe where you can just sit back, relax and indulge. Or hop over and pick the leaves of your choice at Origin’s ceremonial teahouse.
